Executive Functioning
What is executive functioning?
Executive functioning skills are tools we use every day to get things done, but for a lot of neurodivergent people, some of these skills are lacking.
And actually, if you look at the criteria for being an addict, almost every single trait is a trait someone would exhibit if they were lacking those types of skills!
So perhaps we should recognize that it isn’t that people don’t want to be unsuccessful or an alcoholic. They are just lacking the skills necessary.
Personally, as someone who is autistic, I have about 3 out of 12 executive functioning skills that work really well (and that’s on a good day). The rest have varied levels of deficiency.
So if I am neurodivergent, am I doomed to failure?
Given that I am now in my 40s, I seriously doubt that I will be gaining any new strengths, but that doesn’t mean I’m doomed to failure!
The key is to focus on the strengths you do have and how you can make the most of them, allowing you to approach life with confidence!
For me that means leaning into my skills in organization, flexibility, and metacognition. But perhaps for you it is leaning into a different set of skills!
And you might have to get a little creative! Banks, for instance, do not appreciate my strength in flexibility!! But I can use my skills in organization and metacognition to create systems to remind me to stay on top of my banking!
Join me today and learn more about the various executive functioning skills and how you can make the strengths you have work for you!
