Most people don’t think Holocaust Education has a lot to do with Special Needs Consulting, but it actually does!

I walked into a traveling Holocaust Museum at 12 years old after reading The Diary of a Young Girl. But in all of our preparations for the museum no one had prepared me for the fact that people with disabilities were also targeted.

I felt like someone just slapped me in the face when I saw pictures of kids with disabilities. It never occurred to me until that moment that some people felt I didn’t deserve to live!

Within the Jewish community, the Holocaust is a tragedy we mourn collectively with our families. But within the Disability community very often we bear this loss of a sense of security on our own because we are the only ones in our family.

Even Jews with disabilities say that they struggle to share their feelings about the Holocaust with their family. While their family can related to being targeted as Jews, they can’t related to being targeted for a disability.

Today greater numbers than ever believe that the Holocaust was a hoax or at best greatly exaggerated. 25% in Ireland and the Netherlands believe this. And the USA and Canada are not far behind with 20%.

And just this weekend, I had a Jewish child ask me in Hebrew School, “Why should we learn about being Jewish if we are just going to get killed for it?” No child should have to ask that question.

It truly angers me to see children, whether Jewish or disabled (or both!), growing up not feeling proud of who they are! We MUST do a better job of teaching the Holocaust for ALL of our children’s sakes!!
